Maj. G.T. Johnson - Office of Professional Standards

Major Gary T. Johnson joined the South Fulton Police Department, at its inception March 26, 2018, and has over 26 years of service.  He has held the rank of patrol officer, corporal, lieutenant, and captain.

Major Johnson began his career as a patrol officer in March 1993, with the Fulton County Police Department, in North Fulton County.  He was promoted to the rank of Corporal after two years, and four years later in February 1999 promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.  He Johnson was transferred to South Fulton County as a Patrol Lieutenant, supervising officers on Evening Watch patrol.  In 2001,Major Johnson was transferred to the newly formed Narcotics Unit under the Criminal Investigations Division – Special Operations Section.  Serving as the Unit Commander of undercover officers, drug arrests, drug contraband seizures, and vehicular forfeitures were made in North and South Fulton County’s jurisdiction. The unit worked closely with other Narcotics Task Forces (DEA, HIDTA, and other multi-jurisdictional teams).  In 2004, he was transferred back to the Uniform Division - South Precinct as the Precinct Administrative Lieutenant.  He managed precinct operations, managed property/evidence and equipment, served the public with the permitting-fingerprinting-releasing property.  

In 2006, Major Johnson was assigned to the Uniform Division - Special Services Section as the Traffic Unit Commander.  During this assignment, Capt. Johnson attended all of the traffic accident investigation and reconstruction courses.  He managed the Traffic Unit (traffic enforcement, traffic complaints, investigations involving serious injury and fatality crashes, and traffic-related service for events). He was also part of the Motors Unit.  While in Special Services, he was the administrator of the FTO program for recruiting candidates and the college intern program.  His next assignment in 2012 was his transfer to the Criminal Investigations Division – Major Case Section, where he managed criminal investigations and directed assigned investigators/detectives/crime scene technicians and resources toward criminal apprehension.  In 2014, the transfer and return to Uniform Division as the Administrative Precinct Lieutenant was made.  During the same year, Major Johnson was promoted to his current rank of Captain and assigned to Uniform Division - Patrol Evening Watch Commander.  He managed a watch of officers and field supervisors. Determined training needs/skills, prepared supervisor employee performance evaluations, and investigated complaints and disciplinary actions against officers. Monitored calls for service, directed and supervised resources allocated at major crime scene investigations, and interacted with Home Owner Associations.His last assignment with Fulton County Police was in the Office of the Chief, by way of transfer in 2016.  Major Johnson managed and oversaw personnel assigned to varied department units (State Certification, Crime Analysis, Alcohol licensing, PIO/Media relations, GCIC, Records/Reports, Open Records Requests, Security, and Asset forfeiture). He prepared sworn supervisor and civilian employee performance evaluations, and performed other duties as assigned/required by the Chief of Police.

On March 24, 2018, Major Johnson retired from Fulton County Police Department and transitioned over to the newly incorporated City of South Fulton. On March 26, 2018, the South Fulton Police Department commenced, and he  was assigned to the Uniform Division – Morning Watch Commander.  

Major Johnson earned his Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Hampton University and his Master of Business Administration from the Pennsylvania State University.  He is a member of the National Internal Affairs Investigators Association (NIAIA) and International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

Major Johnson has attained the FBI – LEEDA Trilogy Award, GMA Supervisory Leadership Skills Development Program, IPTM Internal Affairs, GBI – GCIC Terminal Agency Coordinator (TAC) Certification, completed the Mercer University - Public Safety Leadership Institute, Northwestern University - Supervision of Police Personnel, GA P.O.S.T. Management Certification & Supervision Certification, Traffic Accident Reconstruction, Narcotics Investigation, and various other police-related training.
